The narrator, and Gatsby’s next-door neighbor, Nick Carraway, discovers Gatsby is more than any of the rumors, “better than all the others put together”.īut Gatsby has a fatal flaw – love for the shallow Daisy Buchanan. He is discussed, rumors fly about him, his parties are described in detail. In fact, in the novel, the reader has to wait three chapters (almost 1/3 of the book) before meeting him. Sadly, both died very broken and fairly young.Īlthough The Great Gatsby was written in 1925 – the height of the Jazz Age and of the Fitzgerald’s fame – it reflects what was broken about this era. They drank and partied and lived it up…until they didn’t. Their exploits around New York City were stuff of legends. He and his wife Zelda were described as the “prince and princess” of the Jazz Age. The change in fashion from 1915 to 1925 was unlike anything we’ve seen before or since.Īnd right in the middle of all the action was F Scott Fitzgerald. Women were able to vote, they were joining the work force, cutting their hair, shortening their skirts. There were battles against alcohol, which resulted in Prohibition on one side and rampant black market speakeasies on the other. America in the 1920s experienced massive changes at a rapid pace: Between the Great War and the Spanish Flu, millions of people died suddenly.

Like a kind of anti-Joan of Arc, charged by King Dio with a thousandfold mission. “ The journalist’s pen gave him many a size and shape, but one thing never changed: his contempt for tradition, his scorn for Western Man per se, and above all the patriotic Frenchman. His target was the inversion of virtue, the political anti-order that it produced, and the tyranny it naturally, inadvertently must lead to: Much like the Englishman Enoch Powell, Raspail attracted a large following of concerned compatriots at home, but also like Powell, he was hated by the those whose heritage he sought to defend from the continuing onslaught of political iconoclasts and cultural vandals, in France and elsewhere. A Catholic and Royalist man of letters, his warnings were expectantly and depressingly greeted with denunciation and slander. Throughout his life, Raspail witnessed the demise of his country, as it suffered under the collective imbecility of its political and cultural elites. Jean Raspail, who is perhaps best know as the author of the prophetic dystopian novel Camp of the Saints, passed away on Saturday 13 June at the age of 94. Large numbers of people entertain themselves, off and on, by watching street activity. Nobody enjoys sitting on a stoop or looking out a window at an empty street. They cannot turn their backs or blank sides on it and leave it blind.Īnd third, the sidewalk must have users on it fairly continuously, both to add to the number of effective eyes on the street and to induce the people in buildings along the street to watch the sidewalks in sufficient numbers. The buildings on a street equipped to handle strangers and to insure the safety of both residents and strangers, must be oriented to the street. Second, there must be eyes upon the street, eyes belonging to those we might call the natural proprietors of the street. Public and private spaces cannot ooze into each other as they do typically in suburban settings or in projects. With this strongly worded thesis statement, Jacobs positions herself against the chief urban theorists of the 20th century, notably, the proponents of the City Beautiful, Radiant City, and Garden City movements. This book is an attack on current city planning and rebuilding. “A city street equipped to handle strangers, and to make a safety asset, in itself, our of the presence of strangers, as the streets of successful city neighborhoods always do, must have three main qualities:įirst, there must be a clear demarcation between what is public space and what is private space. The Death and Life of Great American Cities Important Quotes. She sees some things she’d rather forget, learns some things about herself she’d rather not know, and ultimately must find the answer to one burning question – if only she knew what the questions were. Written entirely in verse, this tale pays homage to the traditional style of A Christmas Carol, and takes young Tessa on a journey throughout her young life up until the moment she gets hurt. What this book is about: When sixteen-year-old Tessa suffers a shocking accident in gym class, she finds herself in heaven (or what she thinks is heaven), which happens to bear a striking resemblance to her hometown mall. An interesting book for teens Title: Heaven looks a lot like the mall Author: Wendy Mass Genre: Fiction – contemporary Publication details: Little, Brown & Co NY 2008 ISBN: 97803160585086 But when Elizabeth Chast climbed a ladder to locate an old souvenir from the 'crazy closet' - with predictable results - the tools that had served Roz well through her parents' seventies, eighties, and into their early nineties could no longer be deployed. When it came to her elderly mother and father, Roz held to the practices of denial, avoidance, and distraction. Spanning the last several years of their lives and told through four-color cartoons, family photos, and documents, and a narrative as rife with laughs as it is with tears, Chast's memoir is both comfort and comic relief for anyone experiencing the life-altering loss of elderly parents. In her first memoir, Roz Chast brings her signature wit to the topic of aging parents. The government has to allow extra time for voting. The weather does clear up somewhat, later in the day, and more people do turn up. No-one turns up to vote, so that the polling officers phone their families to urge them to vote. It is pouring with rain and even the polling officers are delayed. At the beginning we follow the story from polling station fourteen. There are three parties – the right wing, centre and left wing parties. I was SO excited to see that Holly Black, true to her Massachusetts roots, was doing an event ON her release day at one of my favorite indie bookstores. It was awesome to go back and reread the Folk of the Air books because they were even better the second time, understanding what was going to happen and anticipating all of the twists! I reread THE CRUEL PRINCE, skipped THE LOST SISTERS novella because I felt like I didn’t need it, and dove back into THE WICKED KING earlier this month. To give a general recap on other things, I really enjoyed THE DARKEST PART OF THE FOREST again. I did do reviews for the Modern Faerie Tales trilogy because YIKES and because some of them were first-time reads for me. I was planning on doing reread reviews on the blog throughout the readalong but got a bit lazy. I’ve LOVED following along with everyone’s posts and watching their liveshows whenever possible. I’ve spent the last six months reading and rereading all of Holly Blacks novels set in or around the fae world, along with Kristin, Melanie, Jane, and Alexa.
